What is LPG/ Autogas?
LPG /Autogas is Liquefied Petroleum Gas. Not only is it a cleaner fuel, it is also considerably less expensive than petrol or diesel. This is due to low rates of fuel duty on LPG and low production costs; LPG is a by-product of traditional fuel production.
Can any vehicle be converted?
These days there are few vehicles which can’t be converted. The majority of petrol engines can be adapted to run on LPG whilst still retaining the ability to run on petrol. Where do I fill up with LPG?
There are already over 2,000 LPG filling stations in the UK, with more opening on an almost daily basis.
How could I benefit from using LPG?
The main benefit is the significant reduction in vehicle running costs. Fuel costs are typically reduced by 50%. There are also savings to be made on servicing and maintenance due to reduced engine wear. Some insurers offer reduced premiums for dual fuel vehicles and specific vehicles are exempt from the Central London Congestion Charge Scheme.
What if I run out of LPG?
Your petrol car retains it’s original fuel system. If you run out of LPG, the system automatically switches to petrol, until you fill up again. The RAC state that the vast majority of call outs they attend are for fuel related problems. Having a second fuel system could keep you mobile.
Is my Petrol tank replaced with an LPG tank ?
No, your vehicle will be fitted with an additional tank, this is typically situated in the spare wheel well or the boot. Certain vehicles with sufficient ground clearance can have tanks fitted under the vehicle.
What about power and driveability?
The E-G@S system has been specifically developed to minimise any reduction in power output or driveability, chances are you won’t notice any difference at all.
What about safety?
LPG is considered a safer fuel than petrol, particularly in the result of a collision. LPG tanks are manufactured to much higher standards of testing and safety than petrol or diesel tanks.
